A handwritten note was seen stuck on a wall beside a residential unit in Geylang.

Stomper Charlotte came across the note at Block 317 Ubi Avenue 1 on June 13 and shared photos with Stomp.

The note said: "To the 2 female tenants. Please refrain from smoking in your unit with your window (wide open) the whole day. Alternatively, maybe go somewhere else to smoke.

"There is a primary school in front, and a childcare centre at the back of your unit. Since May 23, 2024, this has been highly disruptive to the people living in surrounding units.

"Your habits have been highly disruptive to your neighbours, and yesterday was the last straw. Your smoke has bombarded my unit from 12am to 3.45am.

"Everybody has to seal their windows and doors shut because of you. Please have some consideration for your neighbours. Renting shouldn't permit you otherwise."

Charlotte, who lives nearby, said she "applauds the letter writer."

She told Stomp: "These two units reek of cigarette smoke at all hours of the day, especially at night when the residents are home and smoking together concurrently until 3am to 4am.

Charlotte has filed feedback through the LifeSG app.

"The stench is intolerable, and I have elderly folks and kids with asthma in my house," she added.

"A whole bunch of us are frustrated."

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), smoking within households is not an offence.

NEA encourages smokers to exercise social responsibility, and refrain from smoking where second-hand smoke can affect others, including neighbours living beside, above, or below them.

Those who smoke at home are advised to close the door and windows, or smoke in areas where smoking is not prohibited, such as open spaces and unsheltered car parks.
