A Foodpanda delivery rider has been temporarily suspended after repeatedly asking a customer for Hari Raya “green packet money”.

Stomper JJ told Stomp she ordered two items from Stuff’d at Bedok Mall through the Foodpanda platform on March 27 at around 1.30pm.

“This rider pestered me with texts to give her green packet money for Hari Raya,” she said.

According to screenshots shared by the Stomper, the rider allegedly sent multiple messages in Malay, including “duit raya tkda ke hehehe” and “no duit raya ke hehehe”, asking for Hari Raya money.

JJ said she found the messages inappropriate.

“While I think delivery riders should get some tips as a token of appreciation for their services, constantly asking for money is not an appropriate act,” she said.

“Tokens of gestures, tips or any hongbao should be given willingly and out of goodwill.”

JJ, being a delivery rider herself, usually tips delivery personnel or offers them drinks, but chose not to do so in this instance.

“I did not because I don’t feel that this rider deserves credit,” she told Stomp.

JJ said while riders hope that customers acknowledge their work, they should also uphold professional conduct.

“We hold our heads high by earning every bit of dollars and cents with our efforts and time,” she said, adding that riders should not appear to be “begging for money”.

Screenshots also show the Stomper contacting Foodpanda to raise the issue, saying: “Tips or any form of kind gesture should be given out of goodwill and not forcefully persuaded by riders.”

In response to a Stomp query, Foodpanda said it is committed to providing a safe and respectful experience for customers.

“Following a thorough investigation, we have identified the delivery partner involved and temporarily suspended them for their inappropriate behaviour,” a Foodpanda spokesperson said on April 2.

“They will be required to undergo retraining before they can resume deliveries.”
