Explosions at Hougang bike shop offering PAB batteries and charging service: LTA investigating
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is investigating a bicycle shop in Hougang Avenue 7 where explosions allegedly took place.
Stomper Paul said the shop sells batteries and provides charging service for power-assisted bicycles (PABs).
"Twice, a battery exploded with a deafening sound and huge smoke during the charging process," recounted the Stomper.
"Fortunately, it was day time and the shop owner managed to extract the burning battery from the charging port and threw it outside of his shop.
"He just smiled at the burning battery, which caused an irritating smell. Just imagine if the fire had spread to the rest of the charging batteries. The whole shop would be engulfed in flames and spread to whole block."
The Stomper said he reported the incident to LTA.
In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for LTA said it is aware of the incident and is currently investigating.
"To improve public safety and minimise the risk of fire incidents, LTA requires all importers of motorised active mobility devices to obtain approval before importing these devices into Singapore," said the spokesperson.
"PABs must comply with the EN15194 standard and undergo type-approval and sealing before registration. Motorised personal mobility devices must be UL2272-certified and e-scooters must undergo regular inspections.
"Members of public who notice any fire hazards can report them to their respective town councils, management corporations, or to the Singapore Civil Defence Force via the myResponder app."
