Driver who fled Yishun crash charged for having samurai sword in car, knuckleduster at condo
A man was caught and charged after fleeing a car accident in Yishun on June 20.
An assortment of weapons as well as substances believed to be controlled drugs and drug paraphernalia were found in the car.
A resident of Orchid Park Condominium at Yishun Street 81 told Stomp: "After that, the person actually came to hide in this area."
According to the resident, Central Narcotics Bureau officers were at the condo. A chainsaw was spotted on the ground.
Maurice Tan Wee Hao, 28, was charged in court on June 22 with two counts of violating the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act.
He was charged with possessing an offensive weapon, specifically a samurai sword, at Yishun Street 71 at around 8:45 pm on June 20.
Tan was also charged with possession of a knuckleduster at Orchid Park Condominium on June 21 at 11:05pm.
He had allegedly committed the offences while on parole.
When Tan fled the accident scene, he left behind his 32-year-old passenger who was arrested for consumption and possession of controlled drugs, possession of drug apparatus and consorting with persons carrying offensive weapons.
The police said they had received a call for assistance at about 8.15pm on June 20.
When officers reached the scene, the Volkswagen Golf sped off. It subsequently skidded and crashed into the lamp post. Tan abandoned the car and fled on foot before he was caught.
The suspected drug-related offences were referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau.
If convicted of an offence under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, Tan may face up to five years in prison and at least six strokes of the cane.
Under the Prisons Act, if the offender commits an offence during parole, he may face an additional prison sentence of up to 280 days.
