Stall rejects Stomper's $16k compensation claim over plastic in dessert: 'Outrageous and malicious'

Original article:

A pair of friends found pieces of small plastic in their durian snow ice dessert from Mei Heong Yuen Dessert on June 11.

Stomper Jes shared photos of the pieces of plastic.

The Stomper recounted: "We encountered small pieces of hard objects, but swallowed them at first, thinking they were crushed ice. However, when we came across a particular hard piece, we realised it was actually hard plastic!"

The pair approached the dessert restaurant's staff members and showed them the pieces of plastic they found in the food.

They asked the staff members to filter the remainder of the durian purée and filmed the process. The filtering revealed even more pieces of plastic.

Jes asked to speak to the restaurant's manager, who purportedly did not pick up the call.

The pair took matters into their own hands and called the main outlet, located in Chinatown.

"The owner answered the call, and claimed it was impossible for them to be plastic. She offered a replacement, exchange, or refund," Jes said.

"We explained to her the seriousness of the situation, but she still brushed it off and said she would ask the staff for photos and send the dessert down to her to investigate."

The manager told Jes that she would call her back the next day, but on the following day, Jes received a voice message from a staff member saying it was impossible for there to have been plastic in the durian purée.

Jes added: "We called her, and she sounded hostile. She pushed the responsibility to her supplier and claimed the durian was not grown by her.

"We told her we would report the case to the authorities for investigation and she guilt-tripped us by asking if we wanted to see her die."

In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it is looking into the matter.

SFA added: "Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices."

Those with concerns about food safety practices by food operators should report to SFA through their online feedback form at www.sfa.gov.sg/feedback.
