'Cruel' sight of frogs and eels packed in tanks outside restaurant: SFA looking into case
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is looking into a case in which frogs and eels were seen cramped in tanks outside a Jalan Besar restaurant.
Stomper Maddy came across the scene at Chao Qian Seafood & BBQ Restaurant, located in Hoa Nam Building at Foch Road, on July 13. She described it as "animal cruelty".
She told Stomp in a July 31 report: "I hope their suffering can be relieved" and "We are a first-world country with third-world behaviour."
In response to a Stomp query, SFA said it is looking into the matter.
"SFA and the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster of the National Parks Board (NParks), developed a set of guidelines on good practices for housing, handling and slaughtering of frogs in cooked food premises," the agency shared in a statement on Aug 1.
"The objectives of the guidelines are to ensure food safety, animal health and welfare standards are maintained.
"While there are no specific guidelines for eels, SFA will continue to monitor the situation and work with AVS where necessary to ensure proper standards are maintained in food establishments."
Chao Qian Seafood & BBQ Restaurant told Stomp: "We appreciate our patrons' input on our menu and operations. We'll definitely look into improving our display management for the frog and eels. Their insights help us serve our customers better."
