Commuter asks how 'oversized' PMA made it onto MRT without 'detection and interception'

Another day, another big personal mobility device (PMD) on the MRT.

Stomper Anthony was bewildered to see what he described as an "oversized two-seater PMD" on a North-South Line train.

He took pictures of a man riding the red personal mobility aid (PMA) on Nov 26 at 6.30am and shared the "clear photo evidence" in an email to Stomp, the Land Transport Authority, the Ministry of Transport and SMRT.

Anthony wrote: "The train was heading towards Marina Bay, while this PMD was seen remaining in the cabin after Yew Tee MRT station.

"Certainly the authorities would be well aware of the implications in allowing such non-compliant devices within the public transport network – without detection and interception."

Anthony told Stomp on Nov 28 that he had yet to hear back from anyone else about his email.

Under the Active Mobility Act, PMAs must have only one seat and be used by a person who has difficulty walking.

They may be used on public transport as long as they meet the following requirements:

  • Total weight (including user): 300kg
  • Length: 120cm
  • Width: 70cm
  • Height (from floor to top of PMA or user's head when seated, whichever is higher): 150cm

This is not the first time commuters have raised safety concerns involving PMDs on the MRT.

A Reddit post earlier this month showed a child on the lap of a man who was sitting on a PMA.

Separately, Stomper J spotted a man riding an unusually large PMA on the East-West Line on Nov 7 and exclaimed: "AGAIN, WHY DID A BIG PMD COME INTO THE MRT!????? WHY DIDN'T TRAIN STAFF CHECK!!!?????"

It was J's third such sighting.

What do you think?
