Insects were approved for consumption in Singapore recently, but cockroaches are not among the approved species.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is taking enforcement action after a cockroach was caught on camera in a Yishun hotpot restaurant on July 16.

Stomper Traww shared a three-second video of the insect crawling along the side of the food conveyor belt beside the covered dishes.

"A friend and I were dining at Jianghu Hotpot in Northpoint City and halfway through our meal, we saw a cockroach crawling on the conveyor belt and quickly lost appetite to continue eating there," said the Stomper.

"After informing the staff about it, the staff casually tried to downplay it, saying they do their regular pest control and the cockroach was nothing to worry about."

Stomp has contacted Jianghu Hotpot for more info.

In response to a Stomp query, SFA said it has inspected the food establishment and will be taking enforcement action against the operator for food safety lapse.

SFA added that the agency puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures. Food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices, as well as ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained.
