Clementi stall refutes complaint about $2.80 iced lemon tea -- but Stomper turns out to be right
A stall in Clementi has explained why its iced lemon tea is priced at $2.80 following feedback from a customer who complained about the drink being 'exorbitant'.
However, checks revealed that the beverage does indeed cost more at the stall compared to other coffee shops in the area.
Stomper MaxRoh previously shared how he visited FoodHub, located at Block 449 Clementi Avenue 3, on Jan 16 and was charged $2.80 for a cup of iced lemon tea.
Appalled, he asked staff at the drinks stall about the "exorbitant price".
"She simply shrugged and said everywhere is expensive now," recounted MaxRoh, who described his drink as "just syrup diluted with water" and filled with a lot of ice.
A worker at the stall subsequently clarified that the iced lemon tea costs $2.70 and is served in a large 700ml cup.
"It may be cheaper at other coffee shops because they use a smaller cup," she told Shin Min Daily News, adding that the stall has never had customers complaining its drinks are too expensive.
A Shin Min reporter visited two other coffee shops located 100m away from FoodHub.
The one at Block 450 Clementi Avenue 3 sells iced lemon tea for $1.80 if you are dining in. Takeaways cost $2 for a small cup and $2.60 for a large cup. Staff explained that this is due to the cost of the plastic cups for takeaway orders.
At the second coffee shop, a small cup of iced lemon tea is $1.90 while a large cup costs $2.40.
The large cup here has the same 700ml volume as the one that the Stomper complained about despite the price difference of 30 cents.
This means that FoodHub's iced lemon tea is indeed the most expensive out of the three locations.
However, it actually has the cheapest coffee and tea at $0.80 per cup - compared to $1 and $1.20 at the other two coffee shops.
An employee explained: "The discounts for kopi-o and teh-o have been ongoing for a year."
