Chinese national flies off after allegedly stealing $716 handbag from airport shop, arrested on return
A 56-year-old Chinese national was arrested for her suspected involvement in theft at a Changi Airport shop more than a month after the theft.
The police were alerted to a handbag valued at $716 stolen from a retail shop at the transit area of Terminal 4 on Jan 7. The staff had discovered that the handbag was missing from the display shelf and confirmed that no one had bought the handbag.
CCTV revealed that the woman had entered the shop, allegedly placed the handbag on her luggage trolley and left without paying.
Her identity was subsequently established, but she had already departed from Singapore.
On Feb 17, the woman returned to Singapore and was arrested at Changi Airport.
She was to be charged in court on Feb 27 for theft in dwelling, which carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine or both.
Last month, an Indian national allegedly stole a $489 tie clip at Changi Airport shop and flew out of Singapore on Jan 23, but he was arrested on his return on Jan 28.
