CCTV catches Indian national slipping $489 tie clip into pocket in Changi Airport shop before flying off
An Indian national allegedly stole a $489 tie pin from a Changi Airport shop and departed from Singapore.
The police were alerted to the shop theft after the tie clip was discovered missing from the shop in the transit area of Terminal 2 on Jan 23.
CCTV footage revealed that the man had entered the shop and browsed around before discreetly slipping the tie clip into his left pocket and leaving the shop without paying.
The 25-year-old man's identity was subsequently established, but he had already flown off.
But on Jan 28, he returned to Singapore and was in transit at Changi Airport when he was arrested.
The police recovered the missing tie clip in his possession.
He will be charged on Feb 4 for theft in dwelling, which carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine or both.
Recently, on Dec 23, 2024, another Indian national, a 62-year-old woman, was arrested for a series of shop thefts in the transit area of Changi Airport after perfumes and souvenir accessories amounting to $1,120.60 were reported missing from four retail outlets.
She was detained before she could board her flight out of Singapore.
