Indian national arrested for stealing $1,120 worth of goods at Changi Airport's transit area before flight
A 62-year-old woman has been arrested for her suspected involvement in a series of shop thefts in the transit area of Changi Airport.
The police said in a statement that they were alerted to the cases on Dec 23, after perfumes and souvenir accessories amounting to $1,120.60 were reported missing from four retail outlets.
The items were discovered missing after a staff member from one of the stores observed the Indian national behaving suspiciously by entering and exiting the store without purchasing any items.
The store's loss prevention officer then reported the matter to the police after confirming the items were missing.
Officers from the Airport Police Division responded swiftly and detained the woman before she could board her flight out of Singapore.
Preliminary investigations revealed that she entered four different stores and had allegedly stolen various items by concealing them in her handcarry bag before exiting the stores without paying.
The woman will be charged in court on Jan 23 with the offence of theft in dwelling.
The offence carries a jail term of up to seven years, and a fine.
The police said they take a serious view of shop theft cases and offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
They will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter cases of shop theft.
