A blade broke off from a ceiling fan and flew into a closed window, nearly hitting a person.

That person was Stomper Andy's girlfriend's father.

The Stomper said it happened on July 23 when they were having dinner in Hougang.

"This blade from the Elmark fan suddenly broke off and came flying down, just slightly missing my father's head," recounted the Stomper.

"It hit the window which was closed. If the window wad not closed, the blade would have flown down eight floors down and hit the cars parked below."

The Stomper contacted the fan company, Elmark, to get the broken blade replaced.

"Elmark customer service was 'quite sure' that the fan was bought in Malaysia and did not want to give a free replacement. No apology was even made," said the Stomper.

"When asked for a replacement, the customer service said that Singapore and Malaysia are different companies and managements."

The Stomper was told the fan blade would cost $125.

"Elmark sarcastically told me I may purchase it from Malaysia where it's cheaper," said the Stomper, who shared screenshots of his WhatsApp convo with Elmark.

The Stomper then contacted the Malaysian company, which also refused to replace the blade for free as the fan was three years old. A new blade would cost RM400 (S$115) plus an installation fee of S$50.

In 2019, more than 500 units of ceiling fans from 17 models by Elmark Marketing were recalled for safety issues such as potentially falling, electrocuting someone or causing a fire. Fan blades could also come loose when in use and cause cuts. No injuries were reported.
