Cars crash after schoolgirl crosses on red in Clementi and walks away unfazed: Driver pays $1.5k for repairs
A secondary school girl allegedly caused a collision between two cars while crossing when the red man was showing at Clementi Avenue 2 on Aug 27.
A Stomper shared dashcam footage with Stomp and said it happened at about 8.30pm.
"Because of her actions, I had to emergency brake," she said. "The car behind me also had to brake suddenly and ended up hitting the rear of my car.
"Both vehicles were damaged in the accident.
"My newborn baby was also in the car at the time, which made the situation even more frightening."
In the clip, the girl in uniform and carrying a guitar on her back appears to be looking at her phone as she begins crossing the road.
She seems startled when she notices the Stomper's car suddenly braking in front of her but soon continues on her way.
According to the Stomper, the pedestrian walked off without showing concern for the accident she had caused.
"She just walked away like it was her 'grandfather's road'," the Stomper recalled. "It was shocking."
She added that the damage to her car cost around $1,500 to repair, with the bumper and boot affected.
"The boot couldn't close properly after the accident," she said.
"There were four adults, one kid and one baby in the two cars, and all of us were affected. Yet, she just walked away like nothing happened."
The driver of the second car, who was driving a Grab rental vehicle, reportedly told the Stomper he had no money to compensate and begged them not to make an insurance claim.
"He even showed us his bank account and it was empty," the Stomper said. "We decided to settle privately and not claim against him."
The Stomper hopes the incident will serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety, especially for children and youth.
"Recently, there was another case where a small boy dashed out onto the road without looking," she said. "Drivers are often held accountable, but reckless behaviour from pedestrians can also cause serious accidents.
"I hope the school and parents can help educate children on proper road safety, because this could have easily resulted in serious injuries."
The Stomper said she has also given feedback to the Ministry of Education about the incident.
