Car bursts into flames in MCE tunnel, triggering fire alarm and sprinklers

A car caught fire in the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) tunnel on Sept 18, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Stomper Wendy shared with Stomp that she was driving towards the city when she noticed the tunnel being shut down.
"All cars had to exit by Airport Road and fire alarm bells were sounding," she said.
"I exited upon seeing the signals and instructions asking cars to leave. But some cars still continued the journey and got stuck inside."

Stomper Kelvin alerted Stomp to a video of the incident posted on TikTok by user @fyidlymo. In the caption, the user TikToker said the fire caused a heavy jam in the tunnel.
In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire along the MCE towards Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) at about 6.40pm.
The fire, which involved a non-electric car, was extinguished by the tunnel's deluge system as well as SCDF firefighters using a compressed air foam jet.
There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
