A taxi driver rolled up his car window, pinning a Traffic Police officer's arm, and then drove forward, causing it to be fractured.

On Sept 30, Jeremiah Ong Seng Hwee, 72, was sentenced to seven days' jail and disqualified from driving for eight months, after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to the officer by committing a rash act that endangered his safety.

On Oct 9, 2022, at about 5pm, the officer was on patrol on his motorcycle when he saw Ong using his mobile phone while driving on Farrer Road. He signalled to Ong to pull over.

When Ong stopped at the side of the road, the officer told the cabby to hand over his NRIC and driving licence, and step out of the taxi.

When Ong refused to comply, the officer reached into the taxi through the open window and attempted to turn off the ignition. While the officer's arm was still in the car, Ong wound up the window, pinning the officer's arm between the window and the door frame.

Ong then inched the car forward several times, despite the officer telling him to stop.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Chye Jer Yuan said it was only after a passer-by intervened that Ong complied and stepped out of his taxi.

The officer's arm was fractured. His right shoulder also had limited motion due to the pain. He was given 14 days' hospitalisation leave.

In response to ST's queries, a ComfortDelGro spokesman said: "The company does not condone such behaviour. Following a thorough review, the driver's service agreement was terminated.

"We remain committed to upholding our service standards and ensuring the safety and professionalism of our drivers."

Those who cause grievous hurt by committing a rash act that endangers personal safety can be jailed for up to four years, fined up to $10,000, or both.
