A morning walk took a startling turn for a group of visitors at Gillman Barracks when they spotted a bright green snake hanging on a fence.

Stomper Parvathy shared that the sighting occurred on May 23 at about 9.15am.

"We usually go for walks there and never expected to see a snake in this area," she said. "It was a scary experience."

Photos taken by Parvathy show the long, thin snake resting on a fence, its vibrant green body blending into the surroundings.

She added that this wasn't the first time they had seen such a snake in the area.

"The first time was along a parallel road near the main road. It looked like the same type of snake, but we didn't manage to take pictures then."

From the Stomper's photos, the reptile appears to be an oriental whip snake.

It is mildly venomous but usually shy and docile, preferring to stay away from people.

According to NParks, if you encounter a snake in public, you should:

  • Stay calm and back away slowly, giving it space to retreat.
  • Not approach or attempt to handle the snake but leave it as it is, especially if it is in its natural habitat.
  • Call NParks on 1800-476-1600 if you need help.
  • Keep your pets on a tight leash as they might chase after the snake and frighten it.
