Town council cordons off Bishan swing after boy's fingertip sliced off, seeks to contact family

Original article:

A boy was injured while using a swing in Bishan on Sept 22.

Stomper KG shared with Stomp that the incident happened at a newly reconstructed pavilion swing near Block 219 Bishan Street 23 at about 5pm.

He said the boy, who is 10 and lives in Ang Mo Kio, severed his fingertip after it got trapped by the loose wooden slats of the swing seat.

"In great pain, the boy and his elder brother approached two nearby foreign workers who were cleaning the railings by the riverside for help," KG said.

"One of the workers then signalled me to call for an ambulance."

Photos shared by the Stomper show the boy's bloodstained hands and the tip of his left ring finger dangling.

"While waiting for about 15 minutes, the worker did not leave the crying boy's side and helped to reassure and calm him aside and helped to reassure and calm him.

"Thanks to these two foreign workers from Tong Shing Contractors! Our salute and appreciation to them."

In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they received a call for assistance at about 5.05pm.

The boy was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital for treatment.

The Stomper added that the swing, which has been popular with residents and park users, appeared to have several defects.

"We have seen many small children using this swing over the past two months and do not want such accidents to ever happen again," he said.

"The town council needs to do a proper review and make good the defects to ensure it is safe for children."

KG also wished the boy a speedy recovery and praised him for managing the painful experience bravely.

Stomp has reached out to Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council for comment.
