It looked like he was just evading the parking fee, but it was more akin to an act of defiance.
A BMW owner was caught on camera removing a car park barrier instead of paying the $46.21 fee to leave the car park of an industrial building in Jurong West.
The twist is that he posted the video himself on May 25.
It has since been shared by others online with captions such as "Drive BMW car don't wanna pay parking fee. What a joke."
Another caption is "Bro playing Grand Theft Auto in real life."
The 21-second video shows the man in a black-T-shirt walking from a white BMW towards the car park barrier past an LED sign that said the fee was $46.21.
He bent down to reach the other side of the barrier and used a pen knife to cut the cable ties on the barrier.
The man then lifted the barrier and carried it to the side of the road where he dropped it on the ground with a clang. As he returned to his BMW, a woman can be seen standing beside the car.
On TikTok, the video has more than 270,000 views.
Many of the comments on the video were along the lines of "Got BMW but no money."
But there is more to it than netizens realise.
The original video was uploaded on Facebook by Ah Hing, the man in the video and the boss of a company called Kian Heng Truck Body Builder.
His own caption for the video was "What should you do when you cannot even enter to your own factory? Don't worries! Just dismantle out the car park barrier."
It should be noted that in the video, he appeared to be exiting rather than entering the car park.
A day after posting the video, Ah Hing shared another video where he recorded himself cutting the cable ties off the car park barrier again.
He did it again on May 28.
In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Kian Heng Truck Body Builder revealed that the company is in a legal dispute with the management of West Connect building at 10 Buroh Street, where Kian Heng Truck Body Builder is located.
"Our lawyer has a case with the MCST (Management Corporation Strata Title) of this building," said the spokesperson.
"They don't even sell season parking. They don't sell parking ticket. Other owners also remove the barrier because the management anyhow fine and charge fees. So many owners cannot tahan. They all have to dismantle the barrier."
The spokesperson added that Ah Hing is an owner in the building, not a tenant.
Ah Hing has posted a series of videos on Facebook detailing his issues with the West Connect building management. In one video, he claimed the management had fined him tens of thousands of dollars.
Stomp has contacted SLP, the company that manages West Connect, for more info.
