Birds feast on rubbish at Yishun coffee shop -- and residents aren't helping
Birds have been helping themselves to food waste at a rubbish collection point outside a Yishun coffee shop.
Stomper Meng said the situation at Block 744 Yishun Street 72 has been happening "on and off".
"The crow population in this area has increased significantly, with them building nests in trees," he added. "Proper food disposal is lacking too."
Meng feels that there are not enough rubbish bins at the coffee shop and has submitted feedback via the OneService app. However, he is not optimistic about seeing improvements.
In response to a Stomp query, a spokeswoman for Nee Soon Town Council said: "Thank you for highlighting the concerns regarding bird activity and waste management at the coffee shop.
"The town council is aware of the situation and has been working with relevant stakeholders, including the coffee shop operator and the National Parks Board (NParks), to address the issue effectively."
According to the spokeswoman, Nee Soon Town Council has taken the following actions:
- Deployment of anti-pilferage bins in the vicinity to reduce access to food waste by birds and other pests.
- Nightly cleaning by the conservancy team.
- Reinforcement of waste management practices, such as keeping bin lids closed and having more refuse bins to prevent overflow, to minimise the attraction of birds.
"Separately, NParks is aware of the crow-related issues in the area and is coordinating with various agencies to address bird nuisance and enhance waste management among food establishments," the spokeswoman added.
"The town council has also reached out to the coffee shop operator, who is responsible for the trade refuse, and they are exploring to have more bins to better manage their refuse.
"We understand the concerns raised and will continue to monitor the situation closely. We remain committed to ensuring a clean and hygienic environment for residents and patrons."
Meng, noting that residents contribute to the problem, shared photos of litter at the void deck of Block 745.

He told Stomp: "As a Singaporean, it saddens me to see this as we celebrate SG60 this year. People will buy food to eat at these stone tables, but fail to dispose of the waste properly, causing crows to come and make a mess.
"Cleaners will come and clean up at around 7am, but it is not right to depend on the cleaners as they work long hours. The authorities need to do something."
