Acres says it's 'unfortunate' men used brooms, chairs to catch python at Teck Whye coffee shop
Diners at a coffee shop at Block 145 Teck Whye Lane were startled when a large python was spotted slithering along an awning.
Stompers Mike and Anonymous alerted Stomp to a video circulating online showing some men using brooms to prod the snake, causing it to fall as screams are heard in the background.
Members of the public then continued to try and catch the reptile using various items, including brooms and chairs.
At one point, a man is seen holding the python by its tail before covering its head with a plastic bag. The group then attempts to put the snake into a black garbage bag.
They eventually carry it away and place the reptile into a sack, as onlookers applaud.
Mr Kalai Vanan Balakrishnan, co-chief executive officer of the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres), told Stomp they are aware of the incident and that it was 'unfortunate' members of the public took matters into their own hands.
"Our Wildlife Rescue team did receive a call regarding the reticulated python," he said.
"We strongly urge the public not to approach or attempt to catch wildlife on their own.
"The methods used in this case were inappropriate and could have injured the snake - a protected species under Singapore law.
"Such actions also put people at serious risk of injury.
"If you encounter a wild animal in distress, please call the Acres Wildlife Rescue Hotline at 9783 7782 immediately so our trained team can respond safely and humanely."
