7 people, including firefighter, taken to hospital after fire engulfs Toa Payoh flat and spreads upstairs
Seven people, including a firefighter, were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a flat at Block 229 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh on July 29.
Stompers Ella, Sup and Mike alerted Stomp to the incident and shared videos showing flames and thick, black smoke billowing from the windows of a high-floor unit.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 1.10pm. When firefighters arrived, the blaze had "totally engulfed" a unit on the 10th floor.
They extinguished the fire using two water jets.
Firefighters then forced their way into the unit directly above on the 11th floor, which was also on fire, and put it out with another water jet.
SCDF said two people from the affected 10th-floor unit and three others from neighbouring units were assessed for smoke inhalation - one of whom also suffered burn injuries. All five were taken to Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
A child from a neighbouring unit was also assessed for smoke inhalation and conveyed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital.
During the operation, a firefighter experienced fatigue and felt unwell. He was also taken to SGH as a precaution.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MP Saktiandi Supaat, who arrived at the scene at about 2.45pm, said in a Facebook post that his welfare team and the Housing Board (HDB) were working to ensure that families from the affected units receive temporary housing and essential amenities.
He added that the town council would assist with clearing debris from the units.
"Our thoughts are with the affected residents and their families," said Mr Saktiandi.
"We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the authorities to support those impacted.
"For now, there will be some disamenities as agencies work to quickly restore electricity, water, and lift services at the block."
