A fire erupted in a bedroom on the 23rd floor of Block 5 Holland Close on the night of June 19.

Stomper Nisa captured a video of the blazing unit at 7.55pm, which emitted heavy black smoke seen from afar.

Photos also show the magnitude of the smoke in the night sky.

According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), firefighters from Alexandra Fire Station responded to the incident at about 7.25pm.

The post said: "Firefighters entered the smoke-filled unit and extinguished the fire with two water jets.

"As a result of the fire, the rest of the unit also sustained heat and smoke damage."

Two people who had evacuated the unit prior to the firefighters' arrival were assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to Singapore General Hospital.

Around 100 people were evacuated by the police and the SCDF from the block.

However, two firefighters experienced heat exhaustion during the operation.

Both were conscious when taken to Singapore General Hospital and National University Hospital each.

One of the firefighters was discharged from the hospital on the morning of June 20 and was given five days of medical leave.

The other firefighter was warded for further observation. SCDF said it will continue to check on their well-being.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Minister Chan Chun Sing, visited the scene to help affected residents.

He wrote on Facebook: "Our thoughts are with the two residents who were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and the two brave firefighters receiving treatment for heat exhaustion. We wish them all a full and speedy recovery."

Mr Chan said those who needed help or temporary lodgings could contact the Buona Vista Community Centre.
