A 25-year-old Malaysian man has been sentenced to 12 months' jail and fined $4,000 for arranging for two Japanese women to travel to Singapore to work as prostitutes.

Wu Wenhong (transliterated) pleaded guilty on June 30 to five charges under the Women's Charter related to operating prostitution activities. Four other charges were taken into consideration.

According to Shin Min Daily News, Wu was arrested on March 7 at about 5.20pm, when police raided a room at Marina Bay Sands and found him with two Japanese women, aged 26 and 27.

Investigations revealed that Wu had joined an online vice syndicate known as FanzaSG in August 2024 after being recruited by a man named Wang Chisan.

Initially, Wu acted as a runner, handling customer communication, collecting earnings from the sex workers and converting them into foreign currency. He received a 10 per cent commission, which was later raised to 20 per cent.

In January this year, following Wang's arrest, Wu took over as manager of the group.

On Jan 11, Wu contacted a Japanese woman who had previously worked for the syndicate and invited her to return to Singapore from Feb 27 to March 7. She agreed and brought along another friend. Wu then began advertising their sexual services online to attract clients.

He also got to know a man named Zhang Kai, 46, through Wang. Wu engaged his services to book a hotel room and decorate it for their operations.

Wu paid Zhang $2,100 and collected a total of $25,900 in earnings from the two Japanese women. After converting a portion of the money into foreign currency to pay the women, Wu kept between $3,000 and $4,000 for himself.

The prosecutor noted that Wu had played a key managerial role in the vice ring, handling operations ranging from liaising with clients and sex workers to booking accommodation. He sought a sentence of 11 to 13 months' imprisonment and a $4,000 fine.

Wu was ultimately sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment and fined $4,000.
