Stomper's 74-year-old dad has rare hobby that takes serious skill and patience
Creativity has no age limit, as evidenced by Stomper Rak's elderly father, who builds complex ship models from scratch.
Rak told Stomp that his 74-year-old dad, now residing in Jurong West, used to work for an oil refinery company and in a shipyard when he was younger, leading to a strong passion for ships and oil tankers.
"He made them with his memories and the research he finds," said Rak. "He can easily visualise (things) just by looking and examining photos online."
To build these models, Rak's father would hunt for raw materials, such as solid wooden blocks, aluminium sheets, wires, special glues and paints – anything that could be obtained or modified to build the ship he has in mind.
Rak shared photos of various ships built by his father, many of which have intricate details such as railings, cables, depth numbers on the ship's hull, and even miniature figures of ship workers.
Rak sang praises about his father: "He is a very creative and talented person."
The Stomper also noted that it takes "lots of patience and determination to finish a single model, adding: "One ship can take years to complete."
