Asian celebrities and public figures have taken to social media to remember veteran Hong Kong actor Benz Hui, who died in the early hours of Oct 28 at age 76 due to multiple organ failure caused by cancer.
Among them was former MP Lee Bee Wah, who uploaded a 2019 photo of herself with Hui and his family on Facebook later that day.
During that time, the TVB star and Singapore permanent resident was living in a 4,000 sq ft bungalow in Yishun, together with his Singaporean wife Angeli Lung and their daughter Charmaine Hui. He had moved to Singapore with his family to enjoy a semi-retired life.
The area is under Nee Soon GRC, which Ms Lee was an MP for from 2011 to 2020.
Ms Lee, 65, told local news outlet AsiaOne that she was very sad when she learnt of his passing, adding: "I can only say he was a very good person and it's just too early for him to be gone."
The last time they spoke was earlier in 2025. "He was based more frequently in Hong Kong recently, but I was supposed to meet him and his family next month in Singapore to attend a friend's wedding," she said.
Ms Lee said her strongest recollection of Hui was their first meeting seven or eight years ago at his home.
"I was passing by his house, which was still under renovation, and his whole family was just about to leave. I went up to them and introduced myself as the MP of the area, and we took photos together and exchanged phone numbers.
"After the renovations for his home were completed, he invited me over. I have been there a few times since."
The retired politician said she is closer to Hui's wife and daughter, adding: "Whenever the three of us meet, we would have a lot to say to one another. Benz would listen to us at the side quietly and joke with us occasionally.
"He also told me many times that if I needed any assistance in my ward, such as making appearances at events, I could let him know and he would do so. But I also knew he was busy and didn't want to trouble him."
Hui starred in many classic TVB series, including The Final Combat (1989) and Golden Faith (2002).
Singaporean actor Ben Yeo, who acted with him in the Singapore-Hong Kong drama Yummy Yummy (2005), reposted an article on Hui's death on Instagram Stories on Oct 28. The 47-year-old added the caption: "(I was) very lucky to have (had) a chance to work with you."
Another Yummy Yummy co-star, Hong Kong actress-model Tavia Yeung, posted a black-and-white image of a candle on Instagram. The 46-year-old wrote: "Brother Benz, thank you for bringing us wonderful memories."
Hong Kong actor Carlos Chan wrote on Instagram that when he and Hui shot their first scene together, Chan was so nervous that his nose bled the entire time. However, Hui, ever the professional, continued performing.
Chan played Hui's son in the Hong Kong drama Kowloon My City (2025).
The 39-year-old wrote: "Thank you for all your works, which accompanied me growing up."
Hong Kong singer-actress Miriam Yeung, who acted with Hui in the Hong Kong film Love Undercover (2002) and its sequel in 2003, posted a photo on Instagram of them from the trilogy.
She wrote in a long post: "I did not expect our reunion at the beginning of the year would be our last. It is so sad."
The 51-year-old said she felt "so grateful and lucky" to have met Hui at the beginning of her acting career. "You selflessly helped and cared for the younger generation. Whenever I felt tired at work, you always offered encouragement and support with a sense of humour."
When Yeung became a mother in 2012, Hui and his wife shared their parenting experiences with her. The star wrote: "I will always remember the peace of mind and warmth you brought me... I hope you are no longer sick and continue to live a carefree life."
Hong Kong actress Candice Yu, 66, Hui's co-star in the drama The Heir To The Throne (2024), posted a photo of them together on Instagram Stories, with the caption: "Dear Benz, I am sorry I was not able to see you off because I was out of town."
Hong Kong actor-singer Pakho Chau, 40, who worked with Hui on the crime drama Line Walker: The Prelude (2017), captioned an all-black picture on Instagram Stories: "Thank you for the joy and memories you brought us."
Hong Kong actress-model Sharon Chan, a co-star from Line Walker (2014), wrote on Instagram Stories: "I never thought I would be seeing you for the last time in the hospital yesterday. Life is impermanent... I have so many memories of you and I hope you're no longer sick in heaven."
"Remember I made an appointment with you," the 46-year-old continued. "Let's have a big meal together later. Rest in peace."
