Youth allegedly shoplifted from Sheng Siong 3 times, stole instant noodles and sardines among other items

Three people were charged on Nov 20 for stealing from Sheng Siong in separate cases.

One was a 20-year-old youth who allegedly stole food items from a Sheng Siong supermarket at Block 233 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 on Sept 14.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, the police identified Saiful Abdul Rajak and arrested him on Sept 16.

He allegedly stole one packet of Samyang instant noodles valued at $8, two packets of Maggi noodles valued at $4 and two cans of Ayam brand sardines valued at $5.

Further investigations revealed that Saiful was also allegedly involved in earlier cases of shop theft at the same outlet.

On June 8, he had allegedly stole one packet of Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen Carbonara valued at $8.20 and one bottle of Garnier Light Clarifying foam valued at $6.50

On Aug 15, he allegedly stole two cans of Campbell mushroom soup valued at $4.20 and one bottle of Pokka lemon tea valued at $1.60.

Saiful will be charged with three counts of theft in dwelling.

Also charged was Catherine Tan Li Eng, alleged stole three bottles of red wine amounting to about $86 in value from a Sheng Shiong outlet at Block 622D Punggol Central.

She was immediately recognised by a store manager after an alert from the supermarket's facial recognition CCTV technology and was detained while attempting to leave without making payment.

After she was arrested, further investigations revealed that Tan was also allegedly involved in earlier cases of shop theft at the same outlet. Between Sept 2 and 11, Tan allegedly stole 19 bottles of Jacob's Creek Red Wine red wine amounting to about $556.

Another woman, 45-year-old Leong Seek Yuen, was accused of stealing groceries amounting to about $89.75 from a Sheng Shiong outlet at Block 410A Sin Ming Avenue.

Between May 27 and Aug 12, she allegedly stole:

  • Fresh Norwegian salmon valued at $8.33
  • One can of HSC Oldenlandia Water 325ml valued at $0.80
  • Three bottles of Delmonte prune juice valued at $24.75
  • More fresh Norwegian salmon valued at $8.75
  • Two packs of Binggre Samanco ice-cream with red bean valued at $16.20
  • One pack of Binggre Samanco ice-cream with strawberry valued at $8.10
  • One tin of Milo valued at $9.95
  • One box of Delmonte fresh cut golden sweet corn valued at $1.50
  • Two cans of Pokka Houjicha with no sugar at $1.40
  • One carton of Nutrisoy fresh soy milk with reduced sugar valued at $2.77
  • Two pack of boneless chicken leg valued at $4.70
  • One pack skinless chicken thigh valued at $2.50

On Oct 1, Leong was detained by a store manager after an alert from Sheng Siong's face recognition CCTV technology and was arrested.

The offence of theft in dwelling carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years and a fine.
