# Volunteer barber gives free haircut to child with special needs who got turned away by barbershops

A volunteer barber gave a free haircut to a boy with special needs who multiple barbershops had turned away because haircuts were overwhelming for him.

In a video posted on Oct 21, the barber — Aidan Loo, 28 — is seen meeting young Uwais at his home. According to the post’s caption, the boy had been turned away by multiple barbershops because haircuts had become overwhelming for him.

“Is it OK if I give you a free haircut? Make you the handsomest boy in this whole building, OK?” Loo says to Uwais.

As Loo and Uwais’ family prepare for the haircut outside their home, with the boy seated on his father’s lap, Loo suggests not using the shaver in case its sound frightens him.

Uwais’ mother tells Loo to try, and Uwais himself, despite putting his hands over his ears, says: “I want to try the shaver.”

The task isn’t plain-sailing, though, as Uwais struggles on his father’s lap whenever the shaver is brought near his head.

With the help of a guard, his father’s gentle but firm hold and his mother’s coaxing, Loo eventually manages to complete the haircut through a series of nimble manoeuvres.

“I’m so sorry,” says Uwais’ dad after the boy runs into the apartment, hands still over his ears.

“No… Don’t have to be at all,” replies Loo, slumped in the chair and looking spent as his girlfriend Amanda gives him a pat on the back.

After a shower and a change of outfit, Uwais emerges with his fresh new haircut.

The boy gives Loo a high-five, a flying kiss, and the video ends with Loo taking a photo with Uwais and his family members.

The special haircut was organised by @Ausometots — a safe space and community for children with special needs. The video was also shared as a collaboration with Francesco’s Barber Club, a social service initiative by Loo that provides free haircuts for those in need.

## Netizens touched by volunteer barber’s kindness

The video has racked up more than 600,000 views and 150 comments.

Netizens were touched by Loo’s kindness.

“Thank you for your patience and empathy — the world needs more of this,” said an Instagram user.

“This is the sweetest thing. Thank you,” another said.

Caregivers and parents of children with special needs were also moved by Loo’s work.

“I work with children diagnosed with special needs and I just wanted to say thank you for being understanding and patient in your interactions with Uwais. We need more kindness, compassion, and understanding in this world. Keep doing the good that you always do,” said a netizen.

“This is SO amazing!!!!!! Thank you for doing this!! you have no idea how much this means to caregivers and the families they care for. Thank you for being an advocate and continuing to do what you do. Please never stop being you!!” another said.

## ‘Lost’ most of his money funding free haircuts

Despite appearing very adept at managing a child with special needs, Loo told Stomp that he has had no training in that department.

“I do work with some children in church through Sunday school, but nothing more than that,” he said.

Loo, who last worked in a barber shop in Melbourne in 2023, said that his work is voluntary, and money is a challenge he faces.

“I have lost most of the money I have made by pouring it back into the work,” he said. “But I have been so incredibly blessed and I’m sure when I look back at this in years to come, I’ll be very proud of myself,” he said.

He is also grateful that his girlfriend Amanda has been very supportive of his social work.

“She has been my rock since I started, and she has seen me through all the struggles from day one. She knew I wanted more out of my career and life, and though I could not promise her the certainty of a corporate career, she believes I will make good on my endeavours,” said Loo.
