SBS Transit lodges police report as bus driver's outburst at car in bus lane goes viral
A bus driver's outburst at a car that was driving slowly and abruptly stopping in front of the bus has gone viral, even as SBS Transit filed a police report against the car driver for posing a safety risk to other road users.
In a widely circulated TikTok clip, the driver of Service 51 bus can be heard describing the car, which appeared to be intentionally slowing in front of the bus along Geylang Road, to the control centre.
"Now the car is moving, but it's only going 10 m/s," the bus driver yells in Chinese, before adding: "Let me drive to the bus stop and see what else the car driver can do."
Passengers on board can also be heard criticising the car for moving "so slow" while filming the incident on the afternoon of Jan 23.
Captioned in Chinese "What is the person in the car thinking?", the post by @jollyfish888 has since garnered more than 188,100 views, 2,700 reactions and 145 comments.
As the bus pulls into its designated stop, the car stops directly in front of it, inside the yellow box junction reserved for buses.
"Wah, the car driver really stopped inside the bus stop," exclaims the bus driver as passengers board.
Netizens divided over
Some online commenters felt the car driver had done nothing wrong, so long as out of bus lane timing", while others suggested that the car might have been facing mechanical issues.
"Probably car breakdown?" one user speculated, noting that the vehicle seemed to be "limping" and may not have been slowing the bus intentionally.
Some criticised the bus driver: "Drivers must concentrate on driving."
Others defended him, pointing out that he was reporting the incident to the control room. "That uncle more angry than the driver," one netizen wrote, referring to a passenger who shouted a Hokkien vulgarity at the car driver.
In response to queries from Stomp, SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu confirmed that a police report had been lodged. She noted that the car driver "drove slowly while repeatedly braking abruptly in front of the bus although there were no vehicles ahead".
A report was lodged as the driver had "driven in a manner that posed a potential safety risk to other road users, particularly to our bus commuters".
