Rat feasts on 'lao shu fen' from JB stall frequented by S'poreans: 'This is the real lao shu fen'
A pork noodle stall in Johor Bahru (JB) has received flak after a rat was seen feasting on mee tai mak noodles from a basket placed on the ground.
A 16-second video posted on 新山消费者投诉平台 — a Facebook group for JB shoppers — shows a rat standing on a blue colander filled with mee tai mak noodles, placed between a bottle of dishwasher soap and a garbage bin.
A few seconds into the video, the rat grabs pieces of the noodles before scurrying away. The clip then zooms out to employees preparing ingredients and tending to customers at a roadside stall.
Mee tai mak, also known as lao shu fen, are rice noodles characterised by their short, tapered shape and chewy texture.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident happened at a pork noodle stall along Taman Sentosa that's frequented by Singaporeans. However, it is unclear if the noodles belonged to the stall.
Netizens call for better food standards
The clip garnered over 300 comments, with many disgusted by the lack of hygiene.
Netizens criticised the employees for placing the basket of noodles on the ground and called for improved hygienic practices. "Food shouldn't be placed on the ground. It should be placed higher up and covered up," a Facebook user commented in Chinese.
Others declared that they will not return to the stall after watching the video clip. "Oh no, this is my favourite pork noodles. I won't eat it next time," a comment read.
"This is the real lao shu fen," another user quipped, noting that 'lao shu' translates to 'rat' in Chinese.
Others questioned whether the person behind the clip informed stall workers that the noodles were contaminated. "If the stall owner cooked the noodles without knowing, customers could suffer from food poisoning and even die from it," said one netizen.
