A video of a Singaporean who says he is struggling while the world thinks all Singaporeans are rich has received mixed reactions from netizens.

The 58-second clip, filmed in Sweden's capital Stockholm, shows a man detailing his experience at a camera equipment store, where the owner thought he was rich because he was from Singapore.

"Every time I meet new people, they're like, you're from Singapore, you're like from the Paradise Island, oh my God, you're so rich," says the man, even while conceding that the equipment he purchased is "not the cheapest thing".

"Just coming to Stockholm here made me realise that Singapore has really good marketing - everyone thinks all of us are rich, which is not the case. Only a …minority are. The rest of us are kind of struggling in Singapore. Maybe we're better off here.I don't know," he adds.

The video, shared on Oct 1by Redditor Rel4x1corner with the title, "When SG tourism ads are so successful, angmohs think Singaporeans are rich" has no attribuition. It is unclear if it is an original video from the Redditor.

It had received 225 upvotes and 50 comments at press time.

'Can a poor person (travel)?'

Redditors were quick to point out that he could not be struggling if he could afford to travel to Stockholm.

"Says u who is travelling from Singapore over to their country. Can a poor person do that?" said a Redditor.

"Being 'rich' doesn't have to mean you have lambo in garage and 10 houses in Singapore. It could just mean you are able to pay rent, buy food, buy camera gear and fly for vacation to Europe without taking a loan or have significant impact on your money," said another.

Several netizens agreed that Singapore is well marketed, while others blamed it on a well-known movie. "You're that guy in the movie Crazy Rich Asians!" said a user.

One user did not believe there were poor people in Singapore. "Most Singaporeans got victim mentality, no one is actually poor," said the Redditor.

One said, tongue in cheek: "After he went for that trip he became poor."
