A TikTok video of a monkey grabbing food meant as an offering for the Hungry Ghost Festival has left netizens amused.

Two women can be heard in the video trying to shoo the macaque away from the paper offerings, and what appears to be a packet of snacks placed neatly on the ground.

One woman waves her arm in a bid to scare the animal while the other warns her, in Mandarin, against doing that when the macaque bares its teeth. She also says to let the macaque take what it wants.

The other woman then says, "Go", to the monkey - but instead, it snatches the packet of snacks and rips it open before scampering away.

At press time, the video, apparently taken near Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, had received 66,300 views and was shared 1,243 times. It also had 734 reactions, 191 comments.

Netizens cheekily suggested that the primate could have been possessed by the spirit of someone the woman knew.

"She never know it's her ancestor visiting them," commented one.

"Maybe someone you know in its previous life," said another.

Some took the side of the monkey.

"So pity they hungry waiting for food no choicex," one commented.

Others were happy that the woman let the monkey help itself to the offering.

"Your family will be blessed. Next time don't chase it," said one.

"God bless you...no matter what...its your kindness that help the hungry baby…" another said.

One commenter said that animals should be allowed to take the offerings.

"Actually I was told if animals took the offerings, let them take. It's fated," they said.

However, authorities have repeatedly warned not to feed monkeys as they become dependent and can turn aggressive when they do not get what they want.
