Monkeys attempt to cross Mandai Road; one gets hit by a car
A video uploaded to Facebook on March 20 shows a troop of monkeys trying to cross Mandai Road amid busy daytime traffic, with one monkey being struck by a car and flung away.
The incident happened near Chye Heng Orchid Garden, where the road cuts through dense forest.
One monkey running across the road was hit by a car, propelling it forward and causing it to stumble. It quickly regained its footing and continued across the road.
Shortly after, another monkey is seen sliding under vehicles to reach the other side.
It's unclear if the monkeys were injured.
Many commenters sympathised with the drivers, with one noting that braking suddenly could have caused an accident on the busy road.
This isn't the first time wildlife has been involved in accidents on Mandai Road.
A few months ago, a lorry, a motorcycle, and a sambar deer collided on Mandai Road towards Mandai Avenue. The sambar deer, considered highly vulnerable to extinction in the wild, died at the scene.
To mitigate roadkill in areas known for wildlife crossings, the Mandai Wildlife Bridge opened in December 2019, providing safe passage for wild animals across Mandai Lake Road. It's Singapore's second ecological bridge, following the Eco-Link@BKE, which connects the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central Catchment Nature Reserve.
