Chinese news outlet Phoenix New Media reported that the incident occurred on Oct 18 in Jiangsu Province, China, when a man wrapped his wife in a tight embrace.

Footage of the incident shows the man hugging his wife and lifting her slightly, but she doubles over a split second later and squats on the ground, unable to get up.

A chest CT scan later showed that she had fractured five ribs and sustained a crack in another.

“I originally wanted to give a tight hug to convey my passion, but never imagined that a hug could cause a fracture,” the man said.

He added that he felt deeply remorseful and did not mean to hurt her.

The woman has reportedly been discharged from the hospital but is required to go for check-ups every five days.

The doctor said the primary cause of her injuries was osteoporosis, according to Wang.

He added that his wife is focused on recovery for the time being and has started making a conscious effort to get more sunlight and take calcium supplements.
