A 37-year-old man is set to be charged after he allegedly acted hostile and aggressive toward police officers, then swung a weapon at one of them, near an HDB block in Bedok in the early hours of Oct 27.

Police officers were patrolling the vicinity of Block 12 Bedok South Avenue 2 at about 2.30am when they spotted a car parked at the passenger drop-off point of the block, police said.

When the officers checked on the male driver, he became hostile and aggressive.

He also allegedly swung a karambit - a small, curved knife - at one of them and then held it against his own neck.

"Despite repeated warnings to drop the weapon, the man refused to comply," police said.

"In order to de-escalate and contain the situation, the officers deployed a Taser to stop the man, who was then placed under arrest."

The man is expected to be charged on Oct 28 with using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty as well as unauthorised possession of a weapon.

If convicted of the first charge, the man could be jailed for up to four years, fined, or both.

For unauthorised possession of a weapon, he could get a jail term of up to 36 months and a fine of up to $40,000.

"The police take a serious view against persons who obstruct public servants from carrying out their duties, and do not tolerate acts of violence towards public servants who are carrying out their duties," they said.

"We will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law."
