A 36-year-old man will be charged in court on Feb 10 over various offences including using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, dangerous driving, and driving whilst under disqualification.

Police officers were carrying out anti-crime rounds along Coleman Street on Feb 8 at around 1.50am when they spotted the man in a car and signalled for him to stop for a routine check.

"The man allegedly refused to comply with the officers' instructions and sped off dangerously, endangering the safety of the officers," said the police.

"He drove his vehicle against the flow of traffic and subsequently collided with a taxi, before speeding off."

No injuries were reported.

The car was subsequently found abandoned along Central Boulevard, where items believed to be controlled drugs were discovered.

Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Central Police Division and Traffic Police established the man's identity and arrested him on the same day.

Using criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to four years and/or a fine.

Dangerous driving is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to 12 months and/or a fine of up to $5,000, and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.

Driving whilst under disqualification is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to three years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Investigations into other traffic-related offences and suspected drug-related offences are ongoing.

The police said they take a serious view against those who obstruct public servants from carrying out their duties, and motorists "who choose to flout traffic laws and endanger the safety of other road users".

They added: "We will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law."
