A video allegedly showing a man defecating at a staircase landing of an HDB block in Punggol has sparked concerns about hygiene and decency.

The video, purportedly recorded by a resident's security camera at 138 Edgedale Plains, was shared on the Singapore Incidents Facebook group on Feb 24.

The 47-second video starts with the man walking to the staircase landing from a lower floor.

He then picks a spot, lowers his shorts, and squats with his back to the wall, while clutching what appears to be toilet paper in one hand.

The man remains in the position for about 25 seconds before raising himself slightly and wiping his rear with the piece of paper he was holding.

Netizens horrified

The video has since garnered over 190,000 views, 470 reactions, and 190 horrified comments.

"Cave man," said one commenter.

Some netizens also pointed out that the man was prepared, as he had brought paper to wipe himself.

"It didn't seem (like an) emergency, he took awhile to have it out. Shame, awful act," said another netizen.

Others wondered why he did it.

"Why at staircase? If urgent, coffee shop mall a lot in Singapore... toilet at Singapore very easy to find," said a Facebook user.

"Toilet at home occupied," suggested one netizen.

Some felt that if it really was an emergency, the man should have cleaned up after himself.

"Get a plastic bag ready to catch it & dispose la… the least you can do. Cat also knows how to do it proper way at the grass," said a netizen.

In response to Stomp's queries, a National Environment Agency (NEA) spokesperson said the agency is investigating the incident.

Anyone convicted of such unhygienic and socially irresponsible acts for the first time faces a composition fine of $300 and a maximum fine of $1,000.
