A 23-year-old Italian man was charged with cheating a Bencoolen watch shop using a fake Rolex watch.

The police said they were alerted to the case at a shop called The Watch Room in The Bencoolen shopping centre on Nov 28 at about 7.30pm.

Deepak Singh had allegedly traded in a Rolex watch engraved with a falsified serial number to a retailer in exchange for three genuine Rolex watches valued at about $94,700.

After further authentication checks, the retailer discovered that the traded watch was counterfeit and alerted the police.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him within three hours at Changi Airport Terminal 1 before the man could depart from Singapore.

The three watches were recovered.

Singh was charged in court on Nov 29 with cheating, which carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
