About 50 people were evacuated from their homes in the early hours of Feb 9 after a fire broke out in a Housing Board flat in Punggol.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire, which happened at Block 614B Edgefield Plains, at about 12.25am.

It added that the fire involved the contents of a bedroom in a flat on the third floor and was extinguished by firefighters using a water jet.

About 50 residents were evacuated by the SCDF and the police as a precautionary measure. Five people had evacuated on their own before the SCDF's arrival.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation, SCDF said.

When Chinese-language news outlet Shin Min Daily News arrived at the scene later in the morning, several residents on the third floor were cleaning up along the corridor. The affected flat, which was empty, had its windows shattered and walls blackened by the fire.

Residents of the block told reporters that five people live in the affected unit and that evacuated residents started returning to their homes at around 2am.
