# 2 teens arrested for alleged theft of 290 cigarette packets and $2,100 cash from Bukit Merah minimart

Two male teenagers, aged 15 and 17, were arrested after a minimart along Jalan Bukit Merah was allegedly broken into and cash and cigarettes worth a total of about $5,100 were reported stolen.

Police said they were alerted to a case of housebreaking and theft on Oct 19 at about 7.15am.

About $2,100 in cash and 290 packets of cigarettes valued at approximately $3,000 were reported missing.

Through ground enquiries and with the help of images from police cameras and CCTV footage, officers from Central Police Division established the teenagers’ identities and arrested them within 10 hours of the report.

Police recovered $462 in cash and 203 packets of cigarettes, which were seized as case exhibits, they said in a news release on Oct 20.

The teenagers will be charged in court on Oct 21 with housebreaking and theft with common intention under Section 451 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code 1871.

The offence carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

The police advised all property owners to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

- Secure all doors, roller shutters, windows and other openings with good-quality grilles and closed-shackle padlocks when leaving your premises unattended, even for a short while;
- Refrain from keeping large sums of cash and valuables in your premises; and
- Install a burglar alarm, motion-sensor light and/or CCTVs to cover the access points to your premises. Ensure that these devices are tested periodically and kept in good working condition.
