Welcome to Stomping Ground a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.

A Stomper has questioned why hospitals are still mailing paper receipts even though billing information is already available digitally.

Stomper M, who is in his early 20s, told Stomp he visited Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) on Jan 2, where he received both an electronic receipt and a printed copy at the counter.

However, he later received another paper receipt by mail on Jan 12, which he found puzzling.

"Most hospital processes today are already digital, from appointment booking and payment to billing records," he said, noting platforms such as HealthHub and the NHG Health app already provide complete billing information patients can access anytime.

M added that mailing another physical receipt felt repetitive and raised questions about efficiency and sustainability.

"After reading discussions on Reddit, it appears this is a common experience across several public healthcare institutions in Singapore," he said.

"Many expressed confusion about receiving multiple versions of the same receipt, while others questioned whether it reflected an outdated default process rather than a real need."

While paper mail may help elderly patients who are less comfortable with digital tools, the Stomper said multiple receipts could also create uncertainty about which copy is the latest or whether further action is required.

M suggested hospitals could consider allowing patients to opt in only if they require a physical copy, which may reduce paperwork and costs while supporting Singapore's push towards digitalisation.

"Maybe it is time to review whether this practice is still necessary in today's digital environment," he added.

In response to a Stomp query, TTSH said it acknowledges and appreciates the feedback and is transitioning towards a more sustainable, paper-light billing approach to improve convenience for patients.

"In the coming months, patients will be informed that bill viewing and payment will transit to digital platforms (NHG Health App and HealthHub), with paper billing being progressively reduced," a TTSH spokesperson said.

"We are implementing this transition through a phased, patient-centred approach to ensure the changes remain smooth and accessible for all patients."
