Stomper says company's 30-minute out-of-office rule is 'stupid'
Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.
Working in a Korean company in Singapore has introduced one employee to many new workplace practices, but this one really takes the cake.
Stomper Disgruntled Employee shared with Stomp that recently, his company had rolled out a '30-minute out-of-office' rule.
"This means if you are out of the office for 30 minutes or more, an email will be sent to HR and your leader indicating you were away for more than half an hour," he explained.
"This is so stupid if we have to leave the office for work, which some people from certain departments need to do.
"If we do need to leave for more than 30 minutes, we need to get approval."
He added that some staff need to leave the office for legitimate reasons like meetings with clients, site visits and even department-level events like team building.
Without approval, the Stomper said employees are at risk of getting a warning.
"So if we suay suay stomachache go toilet and need to wait for a cubicle, we will probably have to finish our business in under 30 minutes or do halfway, tap back in and then return to finish the job," he joked.
Does this rule really boost productivity, or does it just create more stress?
