Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.

Every night at 9.50pm, a Potong Pasir resident braces himself.

That’s the time, Stomper Mr SLWK says, when the banging from his neighbour starts.

“I don’t know why, but I have to close my ears because my heart will feel a shocking pain if I forget to close them,” he said.

“It’s really a psychological emotional torture.”

The 55-year-old, who has been living alone since 2007, told Stomp the harassment started in September 2022, six months after he was discharged from Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

“At first, we could talk about it, but when he saw me in my stroke recovery status, I think he thought he could take advantage of me,” said the Stomper.

The neighbour, who reportedly believes Mr SLWK has been making noise in their block, has been retaliating by banging on the walls at all hours, even deliberately making noise while the Stomper is in the shower.

"I can't even shower in peace," he said.

“I tried telling him I wasn’t the noise maker.

"This four-storey block is over 40 years old.

“In my current condition, I can’t make disturbing noises.

“However, even after we went to the Community Disputes Resolution Tribunals (CDRT) court, he came up to my unit after the session and threatened me by saying if he heard any more noise, he would make my life very uncomfortable.

“I’ve reached a point where I feel anxious doing basic things in my own home.”

Despite multiple reports to the authorities, the disturbances have continued.

The Stomper, who has mobility challenges and cannot leave the flat unassisted, has appealed for a proper investigation and hopes for a resolution that restores peace.

“We have been living here for over 40 years, since 1984,” he said.

"I don’t know if sharing this on Stomp will help, but maybe I’ll find some comfort in the comments from readers.

“I just want to live quietly and with dignity. That shouldn’t be too much to ask.”
