'Instead of moonlighting, here's how full-time employees should spend their time': Stomper
Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.
A Stomper has given a list of suggestions on what full-time employees in Singapore can do outside of work, instead of taking on side hustles.
He shared his views after reading a Stomping Ground article titled: 'S'poreans and PRs with full-time jobs should not be allowed to work as delivery riders'.
The Stomper said: "Work is already exhausting on its own. Why can't people just focus on doing their jobs instead of wasting time and energy on office politics?
"In fact, anyone working full-time:
- Should spend time with family
- Should not be allowed to moonlight in any other profession on a commission basis
- Should rest, take care of their health and be fresh at work the next day to avoid being overly tired
"I strongly encourage all full-time staff to be responsible in achieving a healthy work-life balance. That means spending time on:
- Family
- Education such as through SkillsFuture
- Having the basic habit of sleeping before 11pm, so you have at least six to eight hours of sleep before waking up fresh the next day to be responsible for full-time employment
"The work-life balance we have been harping on is useless because every human being has only 24 hours a day. Which means to have proper work-life balance, a person working full-time from 9am to 6pm would not have time to work part-time or freelance."
The Stomper noted that "a normal human being in Singapore" would need time for:
- Family commitments, be it children, parents, grandparents or spouses
- SkillsFuture upgrades
- Taking up sports to enjoy life
- Volunteer or charity work
- Doing all the above only on weekends because weekdays are spent on work
The Stomper said his opinions apply to all industries and not any specific profession.
