Another parent speaks up after girl, 12, was scolded and told to 'get out' of bus over EZ-Link card error
Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.
A 12-year-old child was left distressed after apparently being chided by a bus captain over an issue with her EZ-Link card.
Stomper N shared her daughter's experience after reading an earlier Stomping Ground article titled 'P5 boy allegedly told to alight bus as EZ-Link card short of $0.30, dad asks for more compassion'.
N said on Oct 30: "After reading the recent story about the Primary 5 boy who was told to alight from a bus because his EZ-Link card was short of $0.30, I felt deeply affected - because something similar happened to my own child.
"My daughter, who is in Primary 6, once faced a distressing situation while taking the bus to school. During boarding, her EZ-Link card either didn't tap properly or wasn't detected in the crowd. Because of that, there was no entry record.
"When she tried to tap out upon alighting, the system didn't detect the exit - since there was no entry in the first place.
"The bus captain noticed the issue and, instead of helping her calmly, shouted at my child and told her to get out. She was terrified and deeply embarrassed in front of all the passengers."
The Stomper called for public transport staff to show more compassion, especially to kids.
"I understand that bus captains have rules and systems to follow, but sometimes children make innocent mistakes. They might not even realise what went wrong with the card," she added.
"A little patience and understanding can make a huge difference to a young child's confidence and sense of safety.
"I truly hope public transport staff can show more compassion, especially towards schoolchildren. These small moments can have a lasting emotional impact - and a bit of kindness can go a long way."
