March 15 South Africa (Turffontein/Scottsville) form analysis

Published

Race 1 (1,100m)

(7) ONE FINE WINTER caught the eye when a fast-finishing second on debut over 1,000m and on the evidence of that performance she need not improve much over this extended trip to go one better.

Newcomers (4) SAKETINI and (8) SNOW QUEEN are worth a market check on debut for the Azzie stable, as is (1) MASTER PREDATOR with Gavin Lerena a notable jockey engagement.

Race 2 (1,000m)

(3) BLACK FROST is the only runner to have been in a race and has shown some ability. Improved last run when runner-up.

(1) I'M A FIREBALL gets a thumbs-up from the stable and given a good each-way chance.

(8) PINETTI can show up.

(5) MAGIC SURPRISE is another newcomer to keep an eye on.

Race 3 (1,100m)

(8) TINA LOVELACE finished a close-up fifth on debut in a feature against male opposition. Need not improve much against female rivals to open her account.

(5) OPERA FAN improved to finish third on this track last time and should have a role to play if confirming that progress.

Watch the betting on newbies (3) FRANGIPANI and (9) YENTYL.

Race 4 (1,000m)

(8) CAPTAIN'S PRIDE has shown up well in both starts to date and does rate the one to beat.

(2) MALSHANA MOU did not handle the soft ground on debut and is likely to improve.

(10) MISS DANON started at long odds on debut but was not too far back and is likely to improve.

(5) WILLOW GEM has had the benefit of a run and can improve.

Race 5 (1,600m)

(2) APACHE CHIEF has finished second in both starts since relocating to the Highveld and deserves to open his account. He is unlikely to get a better opportunity to break his duck and any improvement in first-time cheekpieces should yield an overdue maiden career win.

(3) SOVEREIGN CROWN appears the most likely danger but is engaged to run at an earlier meeting.

Watch (1) CRONUS and (8) GIMME A GREEN CARD.

Race 6 (1,200m)

(6) MS GALORE made a smart debut. On that, she may be the one to beat though she takes on males.

(2) VERIFICATION made headway second-up and at her first on turf. Can do better in this field.

(9) LIFE ON THE TIDES improved nicely second time at the races. A good chance in this field.

(8) SOVEREIGN COMMAND has disappointed since showing early promise. He can still bounce back.

Race 7 (1,600m)

(8) AURORA GREEN ran second over 1,500m last time. Can go one better over the extra 100m.

(1) THE MIGHTIEST will enjoy this shorter trip. Has the form and experience to fight out the finish.

(11) MATTIAZO made a pleasing debut behind the selection and ought to improve to have a say.

(3) NKWENKWEZI finished a career-best second over slightly shorter last time.

Race 8 (1,400m)

(7) MASTER DU ROUVRAY needed his last run after a lengthy break. He can go one better.

(10) O SPACE O was a letdown when a short-priced favourite last time. This shorter trip may suit.

(4) VENCEDOR has not been far back in his last two on this course.

(1) DOIN' TIME ran a much improved race last time, but that was on the Poly.

Race 9 (1,800m)

Top-weight (1) PURPLE PITCHER ran second in a Grade 3 over track and trip last time. He sports first-time blinkers and can end a 343-day wait for his eighth career win.

Last-start winner (2) HOTARUBI is favourably treated by the conditions of the race, as are consistent (3) RADICCHIO and hat-trick seeking (4) TAMARISK TREE.

Race 10 (1,750m)

(8) CALL ME HARRIET ran second to the promising Mocha Blend but disappointed next time out on the Poly. Should be competitive.

(4) ROYAL MERMAID turned in one promising effort on the turf. She meets a modest line-up.

(5) UMZOLOZOLO has not been far back at recent outings over shorter. Step-up in trip should suit.

(3) MAGIC MAVERICK ran on late last time. This trip should suit.

Race 11 (1,400m)

(1) POMODORO'S JET is unbeaten in two starts with cheekpieces fitted. He races off a career-high mark but is hard to oppose under favourable conditions.

Last-start winner (5) IKIGAI and consistent (6) NIGHT BOMBER will likely pose the biggest threat to the selection.

(2) GIMMEANOTHERCHANCE could be in better form.

Race 12 (1,400m)

(7) BEAUTIFUL RANIA has come down in the handicap and now looks to be off a more competitive mark. She is never too far behind.

(11) FORT J'ADORE is going for her sixth win. Although she has the widest draw, she is back on her more favoured surface and should run well in this company.

(10) SIBERIAN WINTER has also drawn wide but has shown up well in her two recent sprints and the extra furlong could suit.

(4) BUTTERCUP BABY has only had three starts and was not far back in her handicap debut. She could prefer this shorter trip.

Race 13 (1,160m)

Last-start course-and-distance Listed winner (2) ALMOND SEA races off an unchanged mark and remains open to improvement.

(11) NIGHT VIGIL is probably better than rated and could pose more of a threat in receipt of 7.5kg.

(1) ELEGANT ICE and (14) CALANTHA have the form and experience to have a say in the finish.

Race 14 (1,000m)

(3) GOLDEN CHANDELIER'S Highveld form has gone off at recent outings. The change of scenery could bring out her best, even if she returns from a lengthy break.

(5) HAPPY ANALIA found One Smart Cookie too smart at her last run but it was a better run.

(6) MAMAS BABY was favourite in four of her last five starts. She won and ran second at her most recent, both on Poly.

(1) WINGS OF JOSEPHINE is way better than her last run and can surprise with a 4kg claimer up.

Race 15 (1,400m)

(1) MARY'S GREENLIGHT acquitted herself well against male opposition over 1,600m last start. A repeat of that performance against female-only rivals should suffice.

Both have the means to make their presence felt, as do last-start winner (9) MY LADY SOUL and hard-knocker (5) BLUE HORIZON.

(7) POINTER is better than disappointing last starts suggest.

Race 16 (1,200m)

(2) LEXICAN POINT makes his local debut after showing some fair Cape form. The change of scenery and a big drop in the ratings could see him home for his second win.

(8) MAR DEL PLATA has been in good form over course and distance. Should run well.

(10) ALL THE TIME is now 1.5kg better off with (7) ABADDON who jumped five points in the handicap for his last win over All The Time.
