Yishun flat kena red paint and debtor's note saying: 'I help you settle, you block my WhatsApp????'

A 45-year-old man was arrested on Sept 12 for loanshark harassment after a residential unit along Yishun Avenue 11 was splashed with red paint.

A debtor's note dated Sept 11 was also left behind.

The note said: "Sistes owe money pay money, I help you settle you block my Whatspp???? Better call me dare do but me can, better call me back (sic)."

The police said they were alerted to the case on Sept 11, at around 1.30pm.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Woodlands, Jurong and Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the man's identity and arrested him on Sept 12.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is also allegedly involved in two similar cases of loanshark harassment along Jurong West Street 81 and Hougang Avenue 2.

The man will be charged in court on Sept 13 under the Moneylenders Act 2008.

For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with up to five years in jail and up to six strokes of the cane.

The police said they have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities.

"Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law," they added.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way.

Those who suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities should call the police at '999' or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664.
