Woodlands condo fire: 50 people evacuated, 1 taken to hospital for smoke inhalation
A fire that broke out at a Woodlands condominium on Oct 24 was likely of electrical origin, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in a Facebook post.
SCDF was alerted to the fire at the Forestville executive condo at 48 Woodlands Drive 16 at 1.25pm.
Videos of the fire were posted online.
The fire, which involved the household shelter and the kitchen of a unit on the 10th storey, was extinguished by firefighters with a water jet. The rest of the apartment also sustained heat and smoke damage.
No one was inside.
About 50 persons from the neighbouring units were evacuated by the police and SCDF as a precautionary measure.
One person was assessed by a paramedic for smoke inhalation and conveyed to Woodlands Health Campus.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire likely started in the household shelter.
Members of the public are reminded to adopt the following good practices to prevent electrical fires:
- Do not overload power sockets with electrical appliances.
- Switch off electrical appliances when not in use.
- Check the condition of wires regularly. Frayed wires should be replaced or repaired immediately.
- Do not run wires under carpets or mats and keep wires away from hot surfaces.
- Use appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark. The categories of appliances can be found at www.consumerproductsafety.gov.sg
