A video shared on Reddit of a woman recounting an unusual "compliment" has sparked mixed reactions online.
In a video posted to subreddit r/SingaporeRaw titled "Uncles these days v brutal", an unnamed woman recounted how, while leaving a stall with her fishball noodles, an uncle in the queue behind her commented in Mandarin that she was "very pretty, but fat".
Rather than taking offence, she walked away amused. Chuckling to herself - though with some incredulity - she described it as "the funniest interaction today, for sure".
Some netizens praised her attitude.
"Ok tbh (to be honest) she is pretty and she has a great positive attitude," said one.
Another said: "Yah at least she said 'funniest interaction today' instead of ranting or rolling her eyes and then proceed to give a lecture on body positivity and boundaries. Was pleasantly surprised by the way she ended the video. Seems like she has great personality."
Others chimed in that there was nothing wrong with being a little plump.
"Some girls look better when slightly plump. Uncle not wrong, bui swee (chubby beauty) bui swee," said one.
"Especially during ancient China… she's just living in the wrong era," another quipped.
Some were drawn to her cheerfulness.
"100% would date her. So much positivity and cheerfulness in her," said one.
Others appreciated her ability to laugh it off.
"Credit to her. She brushed it off as humour/banter. So glad she didn't turn this into a 5 min lecture about body positivity and gender equality and race. All of these label politics has been wearisome," said a Redditor.
Not everyone was convinced. A few questioned the authenticity of her story while others offered offensive comments.
Meanwhile, some netizens suggested witty comebacks she could have used.
"Should have replied the uncle, 'You are ugly but gentle (in Chinese)," said one.
"Should've said uncle is handsome, but old, to complete the banter," said another.
