A TikTok video by user canesoe has ignited a wave of commuter creativity - showing viewers how to always get a seat on the East-West Line during the morning rush. Since then, commuters have been swapping tips to level up their daily MRT grind.

Whether you're braving the peak hour crush or just want a smoother ride, a little MRT strategy goes a long way. Here are some tried-and-tested hacks to make your commute faster, less stressful - and ideally, seat-secured.

1. Avoid carriages in front of escalators

Carriages directly in front of the escalators tend to fill up quickly. Instead, head to the first, middle or last carriages - they are typically less crowded, even during peak hours.

2. Go the other way for a guaranteed seat

If you're near the end of a line, ride the train all the way to the terminal station. Once there, wait for everyone to alight, then stay on board or reboard as the train changes direction. You'll have your pick of empty seats for the return journey.

3. Early bird fare discount

Tap in before 7:45am on weekdays to enjoy up to $0.50 off your train fare.

4. Memorise your route

Some stations have doors opening on different sides. Move to the correct side in advance for a quick exit. On the North-South and East-West Lines, stations such as City Hall, Dover, and Bishan have this feature.

Plan your boarding and alighting by the door number closest to your desired exit or escalator at your destination. This saves time and helps you avoid the post-train scramble.

5. Watch for potential seat exits

Observe your fellow commuters. Office workers often alight at business district stations like one-north or Raffles Place, while students tend to get off near schools. Recognising uniforms or common travel patterns can improve your chances of snagging a seat.
